Blog Tour: The Replacement by Rachael Wade

Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for The Replacement by Rachael Wade, hosted by Xpresso Book Tours.  You can follow along with the rest of the tour here.

The Replacement by Rachael Wade
Publication date: January 27th 2014
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult

Synopsis:
*Contains sexually explicit content and mature subject matter, including language and elements of abuse.*

A gritty New Adult drama about a young woman’s self-destructive quest to find purpose, self-worth, and love in a broken world.

My name is Elise Duchamp. I’m twenty-three years old and I’m known as the town whore.

No, not the kind who exchanges sexual favors for money. The other kind. The kind who gives it all away for free, whenever and however she likes. I am that girl. The one everyone whispers about and the one none of the girls seem to like, because all of their boyfriends either want to sleep with me or already have. Promiscuity is my thing—the kind that slowly, violently turns my insides black, but gives me something I need.

All things considered, I’m not completely reckless. I’m safe, and contrary to popular opinion, I do have a heart. I live in a world of careless choices, and with those choices come careless people. I cannot judge them, because I am one of them. I too bow down to the altar of the self-serving. I am not a good friend. I am not and never could be anyone’s girlfriend. I’m convinced any goodness in me shriveled up and died long ago.

But I am a replacement. That is something I know how to be, and this is a story of the lengths I’d go to in order to keep it that way.

MY REVIEW
The Replacement really worked for me for the same reason that a lot of readers will probably be ambivalent about the novel, at least at first: main character Elise Duchamp.  Author Rachael Wade throws us right into Elise’s world as a girl taught by her parents’ behavior that a woman’s only worth is her appearance and her ability to attract men.  Elise has grown into a young woman who sleeps around—primarily with men already in relationships—in both a desperate attempt to find validation, and as a sort of self-punishment because she doesn’t believe she deserves better.  I think many readers will have a hard time understanding Elise and/or forgiving her behavior, but even so, there’s a can’t-look-away aspect to the book that may keep readers going till Elise begins the slow, painful process of change.  Me, however?  I totally identified with Elise and understood her self-sabotaging decisions from the very beginning.  I don’t know what this says about me, but I do think it speaks to the author’s ability to create a realistic character who could truly exist in the world.  I also appreciated the way Wade was so blunt in her language and descriptions, refusing to sugar-coat things, showing us how utterly broken Elise is.  My favorite quote to that effect:

“The door opens and closes with a quiet click, and all of my hopes for being someone’s something follow Natalie out, reminding me of my true identity.  I am a substitute.  A misfit.  A liar, a thief, and a whore.  I exist to be used, not to belong.”

In terms of plot, The Replacement is a fairly quiet story focused on character growth and relationships, although there were a few twist moments that really surprised me.  I liked a lot of the minor characters, especially Natalie and Jay.  The obligatory “good guy” who sees real value in Elise, Ryder, was definitely dreamy but maybe a little too perfect for my taste.  Still, I think most readers will be happy to see Elise allowing a guy like Ryder in, even if her transformation is a hard-earned one, with plenty of mistakes and unwise decisions along the way.

Just as Elise is a gutsy heroine, The Replacement is a gutsy book.  This was my first read by Rachael Wade, and I’m impressed—the writing was smooth and vivid, the characterization full of depth.  I definitely recommend this one, and I encourage readers who have a hard time identifying with Elise at first to stick with it till the end!

Release Event: Hard Glamour by Maggie Marr

Welcome to the release event for Hard Glamour by Maggie Marr, organized by AToMR Tours.  This book takes place right where I live--Hollywood!--so I really need to read it.

A promise to keep….

Honoring her mother’s last wish, Lane Channing vows to follow her dreams. She takes the ‘big risk’ and leaves her small Kansas town behind and heads to LA, the city of dreams. She’s got a stellar job lined up, an old jeep, and 20 bucks to last her to her first paycheck. Her hopes shatter when she arrives to find her job’s been given to someone else.  Now she’s broke and will soon be living on the streets if she doesn’t do something fast. Welcome to cutthroat – Lane is most certainly not in Kansas anymore.

On the cusp of success…

Dillon MacAvoy has one goal–to become a star–whatever it takes. Even if it means honing his bad-boy can’t-be-tamed-and-forever-single image. Besides the image isn’t far from the truth. Dillon cares only about his younger brother and his career. He’s on the brink of superstardom if he can just decide on the next right script. But for that, he needs a script reader he can trust.

In a strange twist of fate…

Lane Channing is Dillon’s last chance. If Lane lasts the summer without becoming MacAvoy’s latest conquest, she’s guaranteed a job in entertainment. No problem, as long as she can ignore the heat that pulses through her every time Dillon is in the room. After all, love and commitment with a sweet, hometown girl would only ruin the Dillon MacAvoy brand.

Add it on Goodreads and purchase on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

INTERVIEW WITH MAGGIE MARR
Author of Hard Glamour (Glamour Series, #1)

Q: Do you have a routine that you use to get into the right frame of mind to write?

Maggie: I write first thing in the morning. My mind is clear and it's the best time for me to get my words down. Also, I am trying to send a message to my muse that Writing Is Important by making my writing the first thing I do in my day. Plus, it is so easy with everything else that goes on in a day to not get the writing done if I don't make it the first thing I do.

Q: Where did you get the idea or inspiration for HARD GLAMOUR?

Maggie: I love the New Adult genre. I've lived and worked in Hollywood and written about Hollywood for nearly a decade so when Dillon and Lane started telling me their story it seemed like a natural fit.

Q: What was your favorite part writing this novel? Don’t forget to tell us why. J

Maggie: I love it when the characters start to act on their own and surprise me. This usually starts to happen around page 60 or so. Up to then I am listening to them tell me their story but I kind of know what they are doing and where I *think* they are going to go with it but then all the sudden Wham! The characters are off and they are surprising me with their words and their actions--I love that!

I also love to write the sex scenes :)

Q: What was the most difficult part writing this novel?

Maggie: How hard Dillon was as a male character in the beginning.  He is just so Alpha and in unlikeable and closed off--we start to understand why and see that this is a defense mechanism and how Lane is able to break through those barriers but at first he was a really tough guy to like.

Q: What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Maggie: Read!I love to read! I read all kinds of books truly it is my favorite activity. I also love chasing after the children and yoga.

Q: Any future writing news you would like to share?

Maggie: So many fun things this year!  Broken Glamour, book 2 in the Glamour Series publishes March 2014, Fast Glamour, book 3 comes out in May, and finally Easy Glamour, book 4 is set to publish in July.

About the Author
Emma spent her childhood creating imaginary worlds to compensate for a disappointingly average reality, so it was probably inevitable that she ended up writing fantasy and paranormal for young adults. She was born in Birmingham, UK, which she fled at the first opportunity to study English Literature at Lancaster University. In her three years at Lancaster, she hiked up mountains, skydived in Australia, and endured a traumatic episode involving a swarm of bees in the Costa Rican jungle. She also wrote various novels and short stories. These included her first publication, a rather bleak dystopian piece, and a disturbing story about a homicidal duck (which she hopes will never see the light of day).

Now a reluctant graduate, she can usually be found in front of her writing desk, creating weird and wonderful alternative worlds. Her debut novel The Puppet Spell, published in January 2013 by Rowanvale Books, is a fantasy tale for young adults and the young at heart, inspired by her lifelong love of the fantastical, mythology, and video games. Emma also writes supernatural fantasy novels for older teens and adults. Her next book, Darkness Watching, is the first in the upper-YA/New Adult Darkworld series, and was published in October 2013 by Curiosity Quills Press.

Mini Review: Stolen Wishes by Lexi Ryan

Cally…
A sexy smile. Intense blue eyes. A goodness that makes him want to save me from these rumors when no one else would care. I didn't ask for a hero. William Bailey was never supposed to be anything more than a wish, a dream, an unrequited crush. Not for a girl like me--a girl whose fractured family has stolen her chance at a decent life.

William…
Since the death of my parents, I've always done what’s expected of me, what's "best" for me. Until Cally. The moment her haunted eyes meet mine, the fractured pieces of my heart feel whole again. I don’t just want to save her. I need her to save me.

Stolen chances. Unbroken wishes. Two lonely souls grasping for hope in the darkness.

**This novella takes place seven years before the events in WISH I MAY and shows William and Cally falling in love for the first time. It can be read before or after WISH I MAY or on its own.**

**Contains sexual content and adult language and situations. Intended for mature readers.**

MY REVIEW

Stolen Wishes is a beautifully bittersweet novella and the perfect addition to Lexi Ryan’s New Hope series.  This story gives us the background on William (from both Unbreak Me and Wish I May) and Cally (from Wish I May) and how their relationship began in high school.  William and Cally seem like opposites at first—William is the town golden boy, while Cally suffers the fallout from her mother’s poor reputation—but underneath the surface, William and Cally are able to understand each other in a way no one else can.  I thought the way Lexi Ryan described William’s inner conflicts was especially well done—the way his grandmother didn’t allow William to express sadness over his parents’ death was just heartbreaking, and really resonated with me.  And he is just so patient and understanding and perfect with Cally, it melts my heart!  There’s a lovely tinge of sad beauty to the writing and imagery, and while the plot isn’t overly complex, it still has a very nice arc.  With this being just the prequel to William and Cally’s relationship, we don’t get a happy ending here, but we do get hope.  Before or after reading Wish I May, Stolen Wishes is the perfect way to understand more about William and Cally’s background and the beginning of their relationship.  Overall it was just lovely, sad and sweet.

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Excerpt
Following after her, I find her bent over in front of the refrigerator holding the door open and staring at the contents inside. The way her ass is sticking out unleashes something inside me, and I go semi-hard just from watching her. I instantly feel the need to show her that I’m not some weak, damaged man. I walk up behind her and grab her by the waist, turning her around. Kicking the door shut behind me, I push her to the island, and if I thought I could get away with it, I’d be pressing myself up against so she could feel what she’s doing to me. She’s staring up at me with confusion in her big, brown eyes, and I wonder what the hell I’m doing.

“Hop up,” I tell her, and she complies immediately, surprising me by not fighting it.

I place my hands on her knees, spreading them and stepping closer to her so my hips are between her legs. As best as I can, I take a hold each one and wrap them around my waist, and she involuntarily tightens them around my middle, although her ass is still firmly planted on the counter. This isn’t how I imagined her legs wrapped around me for the first time, but I can’t deny that I don’t love the feel of her gripping my waist tightly.

“Arms around my neck, Charlie.” The confused expression on her face deepens, but she does as she’s told.

“What are you doing, Knox?” she asks, looking up at me, her face only inches from mine.

Swallowing hard, I ignore her question and bring my forehead to hers. “Just do this for me, okay? Don’t fight me on it. Just this once. I need to do this.”

She nods, and I’m not sure she knows what to expect, confirming it when I pull her off the counter. Gasping, she starts to struggle, and I have to brace myself against the counter to keep from falling. Jesus, this woman is so damn defiant, and it can be both sexy as hell and annoyingly irritating.

“Knox, what the hell?! Put me down!”

Fuck, I know I should probably listen to her, but I’ve gotten to this point and I’m not stopping until I can prove to myself that I haven’t completely lost all of my strength. She’s not exactly heavy, but her struggling is making it difficult to keep my one good arm around her as I make my way down the hallway, heading into the guest bedroom. Somewhere along the way she stops struggling, apparently having given up and figuring that it’s just easier to let me do this.

I’m slightly out of breath by the time I get to her bed, and I’m more than happy to release her from my arms. Relief washes over me when she plops on the bed, bouncing once. Whether the relief is from having been able to do it or from having freed myself of her weight. Either way, I’m fucking ecstatic, and even though I’m breathing heavy, it was a small victory for me and my bruised ego.

I begin backing away from her because I know the verbal assault is coming, and I don’t blame her, but I don’t regret it.

About Tessa
I'm a twenty six year old book junkie who is also obsessed with sports. Bengals, Buckeyes, Reds are my teams! I work for the government during the day, hang out with Air National Guard on the weekends, and am married to a guy 15 inches taller than me. We're quite the pair! We currently live right outside of Dayton, OH with our two cats. I've been reading since I was a kid. My mom was a librarian, so it was a given. Heck, she even made sure we watched Wishbone instead of the Smurfs. In 2011 when I graduated from college, my mom bought me a Nook, and then in the summer of 2012 I found this amazing site called Goodreads. I was introduced to so many amazing indie/self-published authors. After reading almost 400 books that year, my husband gave me the push to finally sit down and write my own. It was a rocky start, but over time the words started flowing and I couldn't get Jace and Lexi out of my head. If I’m not writing or looking through tons of photos of hot men, all in the name of research, then you can probably find me curled up with my Kindle, ignoring the rest of the world. I love my sports almost as much as I love my books. My other obsessions include red wine, hot men, country music, and all things Grace Potter. I LOVE to hear from readers, so please feel free to contact via any social media site listed below.

AS YOU TURN AWAY (The Walker Boys #1)
Tentative release date: March 1, 2014
Add it on Goodreads Here
Synopsis:

When Quinnlan Reynolds left home at 18, she escaped her small, Georgia town and her suffocating upbringing. She started a new life as a ballerina, and tasted freedom for the first time. But four years later, her first visit home turns tragic. Reeling, Quinn tries to piece her life back together again. But doing so is easier said than done when sexy Jonah Walker saunters back into her life.

Quinn shattered Jonah’s heart once, so getting involved with her isn’t something he’s sure he’s ready to do again. He became someone he didn’t recognize when he left home. He’s spent the last years burying his pain by keeping everyone in his life at arm’s length. Now he needs to get to know his family again, and finally become who he wants to be.

But neither Quinn or Jonah can stay away from each other, especially when old feelings resurface. Something is pulling them back together, and they can’t deny their chemistry for long. One Georgia summer could change both their lives forever, if they can work through their past to have a future together.

EXCERPT FROM AS YOU TURN AWAY

“Dance with me.” He cupped her waist, which wasn’t exactly where his hand belonged, but they were alone, and he’d do what he pleased. Between school, and working the farm, not to mention Quinn’s family, they barely got any time together. But what time they did spend together meant more to Jonah than he knew how to say.

“Always.” Quinn stumbled on the next step, but recovered. She stared at her feet, watching as he led.

“1-2-3, 1-2-3,” he counted. He could feel the smile tickling his lips as they found a rhythm. Quinn was adorable when she concentrated, and even more so when she wanted to get something right.

“Well, you suck at ballet but you’re pretty good at waltzing. Someday you’ll have to tell me how you learned.” Quinn squeezed his hand. “And you’re not half bad at being a boyfriend.”

Jonah couldn’t hold back the grin any longer. “Boyfriend, huh? Is that what I am? That would make you my…girlfriend.”

“I mean…if you want to be…”

She was flushed, and flustered, and completely adorable. Jonah pulled Quinn into his arms, and kissed her lips. She melted against him, and he smiled against her mouth. The response was as automatic as the sun washing away the moonlight - it was something he simply knew would happen. Anytime he kissed her, happiness overtook him.

“Yeah.” He kissed her forehead, lips lingering. “I want to be.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Danielle Sibarium grew up as an only child of divorced parents in Brooklyn, New York. Her imagination was developed at an early age. Surrounded by stuffed animals and imaginary friends, she transported herself into a fantasy world full of magic and wonder. Books were the gateway between her play world and reality. On any given summer afternoon she became Snow White sweeping and cooking for the dwarfs, or Cinderella waiting for the prince.
Danielle always loved dialogue and in elementary school began writing plays and short stories. This is when she began to understand she could not only bring her fantastical world to life for herself, but she could enchant others as well. And so she wrote. She wrote and wrote and wrote.
Sadly the first piece she ever sent out for publication of any sort was a letter to the editor of The Home News Tribune. It was a piece of thanking the first responders for their bravery and selflessness on Sept. 11th. It was chosen as letter of the week.
In 2007 Danielle collaborated with Charlotte Doreen Small to write songs for her CD More. Danielle wrote the lyrics for Take My Hand, and Goodbye, while Charlotte contributed the melody. In October 2011 Danielle’s debut novel For Always was released. She has since released The Heart Waves Trilogy, Heart Waves, Breaking Waves, and Waves of Love.  Danielle graduated from Farleigh Dickinson University with honors, and currently lives in New Jersey with her husband and three children.
